101 Things I Learned in Architecture School #24

I just read a great little book, 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School by Matthew Frederick. Number 24 is a quote from another book, which I haven't read, Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance:

Science works with chunks and bits and pieces of things with the continuity presumed, and [the artist] works only with the continuities of things with the chunks and bits and pieces presumed.

I think in ZAMM, Pirsig explores the meaning and concept of quality, a term he deems to be undefinable. Pirsig's thesis is that to truly experience quality one must both embrace and apply it as best fits the requirements of the situation.
