Robert Dziekanski was a Polish immigrant to Canada, killed by the police shortly after his arrival (you can read the circumstances here). The police lied both about their conduct and Mr. Dziekanski's. An inquiry is being held, but before the police agreed to co-operate with the government's inquiry they first had to be assured that none of the officers involved would face charges because of their actions. Think about that. The government convened an inquiry, but the police refused to co-operate until they were assured that, whatever the inquiry found, they would not be held accountable.
Now there is news that the Polish government may file charges. I don't know how that would work, but as a Canadian I would certainly feel safer knowing that the rule of law applied equally to all. I'm just a little embarrassed that I have to look to Warsaw and not Ottawa to see it done.
